Volunteer Project in Ecuador
In Ecuador, many animals are still treated, trafficked and killed in horrible ways. This project, based in Puyo, is dedicated to offer a safe home and rehabilitation to those primates that have been rescued from animal dealers or families who kept them in captivity or abused them. The centre collaborates with a venitary docter to help the primates that are in poor health. The main goal of the foundation is to enable primates to return to the wild. In order to enable them to do so, the foundation owns two hectares of tropical rain forest, were animals are set out. As some animals will never be able to return to the wild due to health problems, the foundations also offers permanent residence. At this moment, the centre is home to 50 animals.
Volunteers can be asked to perform the following activities:
- Help care for the animals
- Maintain the centre
- Guide activities
- Construction activities
To work at this project we are searching for volunteers with the following requirements:
- Basic level of Spanish
- Love for animals
- Prepared to take initiative and responsibility
- Not afraid to get your hands dirty
- Willing to work in a humid and hot environment
The minimum time requested is 4 weeks.
Volunteers are expected to work Monday-Friday from 8.30 a.m. till 16.30 p.m. Those volunteers interested in guiding, can be asked to work in the weekends as well. Every morning, you can choose what activity you would prefer to perform that day.
What you can do with the foundation will depend largely on your availability, ingenuity and Spanish skills. A basic level of Spanish is recommended, as you will be working with Spanish speaking employers. There is a possibility to first follow Spanish lessons at a language school in Quito.
